What is the difference between an Interior Designer and an Interior Decorator?
Interior Designer vs. Interior Decorator
An interior designer typically has a formal education, and has completed a Bachelor's Degree. Some professional designers have completed a shorter educational program, but have many years of experience in the field and have passed the NCIDQ exam and are members of a professional organziation such as ASID or IIDA. Interior Designers usually deal with all aspects of the interior space, including construction of non-load bearing walls, windows, doors, ceilings, interior electrical and lighting elements and more. Interior Designers are also trained to deal with both residential and commercial furniture, colors, flooring, wallcoverings, window treatments, artwork and accessories. Commercial Interior Design is much different than residential interior design. More knowledge of building codes, ADA, and accessible design for those in wheelchairs and with handicapps are needed. Commercial interior finishes must stand up to more traffic and must be easy to clean and maintain. Many states are passing legislation for the regulation of the "Interior Designer" title. Some states require certain education and licensure to use the title of "Interior Designer".
An interior decorator can be any person who is working in the interior decorating field, regardless of schooling and licensure. There are many short-term educational programs where one can learn to become an interior decorator. Decorators often deal with furniture, colors, flooring, wallcoverings, window treatments, artwork and accessories, but do not get involved with the more structural and construction elements of a project. Interior decorators can specialize in furniture, antiques, custom window treatments, artwork, or many other specific areas. Often, interior decorators are involved in the sales of furniture and accessory items for residences.
